The Seismic Reinforcement Project for Large Scale Bridges in Istanbul Completed.

The works covered by "The Seismic Reinforcement Project for Large Scale Bridges in Istanbul" within the framework of the Loan agreement made on 05 July 2002 by and between Turkish and Japanese Governments, is physically starting as of today. Following the series of earthquakes of 1999 at Marmara region, which caused great material and moral losses, protection strategies and a master plan are developed against a similar future earthquake that might occur at or near istanbul city.

Within the structure of such precautions, the target ıf this project is to strengthen the important bridges on the motorways which from the backbone of the highway network of Istanbul Metropolis, among which Boğaziçi and Fatih Sultan Mehmet suspension bridges are existing. These bridges take place in the list of largest bridges in the world.

When this great Project together with the some other projects having the same target are completed, Istanbul highway communication will be secure enough as per the post earthquake conditions and the uninterrupted traffic flow on arterial road will be ensured, maybe with some measures.


"The Seismic Reinforcement Project for the Large Scale Bridges in Istanbul", which is the greatest project of its kind in the world under single Contract, will be completed by end 2008
