The İzmit Bay Bridge (Turkish: İzmit Körfez Köprüsü) is a suspension bridgelocated at the eastern end of the Sea of Marmara, close to İzmit and approximately 50 km (31 mi) from Istanbul, Turkey. It will be one of the longest suspension bridges in the world by the length of central span. The bridge will be located at the eastern end of the Sea of Marmara, close to İzmit and approximately 50km from Istanbul, Turkey. It will be the second largest suspension bridge in the world by length of central span. Crossing the Bay of İzmit, the bridge (and connecting highway) will provide 3 lanes of traffic in either direction.

The total length of the bridge is to be 3.3 kilometers, with a main span of 1,688 meters.
Construction and operation of the bridge was awarded to a joint venture formed by five Turkish companies (Nurol, Özaltın, Makyol, Yüksel and Gocay) and one Italianconstruction company Astaldi following the international Build–operate–transfertender that took place in April 2009.[1] As of 2010 the contract was signed for the project that is estimated to cost  11 billion for the entire highway from Gebze toİzmir. The construction is expected to be completed in 2017.[2]

The bridge will be fourth longest suspension bridge in the world IHC Merwede Hydrohammer BV is taking part in this project with its S-280 Hydro Hammer which is the perfect solution for driving under water piles in the project. Together with IHC Turkish dealer ERKE Ltd , IHC carried out all technical financial and logistic details of the under water hammering jobs.ERKE Ltd. Professional support and technical service measures in the deal helped a lot.

The S-280 hydrohammer is driving 40 mt long steel piles under water  35 mt below sea level. On these steel piles driven by S-280 the main concrete towers will be located. These towers will be constructed in a separate job site and will be brought to the job site via sea.

Since Izmit region is within an active earthquake zone the bridge will be followed by a special security system. Integrated sysmic sensors will follow the stability of the infrastructure and all data and records about the construction will be followed very closely and in case of an earthquake , an early alarm will be possible.

The bridge is part of the Istanbul-Izmir motorway project. This motorway will be total 421 km long ,  of this 377 km will be motorways and 44 km auxillarry connections. There will be 31 viaducts , 2 tunnels, 199 bridges, 21 pay toll ,  8 service station and 7 parking place.
